Cold Email Infrastructure Setup

By Vikash Nehra Updated June 15, 2026 9 min read

Cold outreach lives or dies on infrastructure. Use your primary domain and you'll torch it. This is how to build a sending setup that scales and protects your brand.

TL;DR

Cold email needs separate domains, dedicated IPs, full authentication and careful warmup — never your main domain. AutoPMTA lets you run this whole stack on your own server.

Rule #1: never use your primary domain

Cold email inevitably draws some complaints and bounces. If that hits your main domain, you risk your business email too. Always use dedicated sending domains (often look-alikes of your brand) pointed at your cold infrastructure.

Step 1 — Buy and configure sending domains

Register a handful of domains dedicated to outreach. On each, set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC and a matching rDNS. Spread volume across them rather than hammering one.

Step 2 — Get the right IPs

Cold email needs dedicated IPs you control so reputation reflects only your sending. Multiple IPs let you rotate and isolate streams.

Step 3 — Stand up the MTA

You need an engine that can rotate domains/IPs and throttle per provider. PowerMTA is built for exactly this — see what PowerMTA is and how to install it with AutoPMTA. The alternative is paying per-seat for managed inboxes that cap your scale.

Step 4 — Warm up every domain and IP

Fresh cold domains have zero reputation. Warm them slowly with low daily volume before scaling — follow the warmup schedule. Skipping this is why most cold campaigns land in spam.

Step 5 — Rotate and pace

Distribute sends across domains/IPs and keep per-domain daily limits conservative. Inbox rotation mimics natural human sending and protects each asset.

Step 6 — Monitor relentlessly

Track bounces, complaints, blacklists and reply rates per domain. Pull burning domains out of rotation early. Our deliverability guide lists the metrics.

Self-hosted vs managed inboxes

Managed cold-email inboxes are easy but expensive and limited at scale. Self-hosting on your own bulk server with PowerMTA gives you unlimited inboxes and full control — the model agencies and high-volume senders prefer.

Run your entire cold email stack on AutoPMTA — domains, IPs, VMTAs, warmup and deliverability in one panel. See pricing.

Key takeaways

  • Never send cold email from your primary domain.
  • Use dedicated sending domains + dedicated IPs.
  • PowerMTA handles rotation and per-ISP throttling at scale.
  • Warm up every asset and monitor each domain's health.
